(no subject)

Naturally, my iPod becomes definitively broken not long before I take a lengthy car trip. Its data is fine, and it functions normally controlled through the I/O port, but the control surface is entirely unresponsive, so if I take it in the car I can't, say, make it start playing (I could make it stop by pulling the power, of course). So that's nice.

Several options present themselves:
1. Time to buy an iPhone! (I'm using mine to write this!)
2. Break your iPod open (slip a tiny screwdriver into the space between the front and back panels, then gently work your way around, popping the plastic clips as you go. Done carefully, it'll fit right back together.) I did this with mine a month ago (when it was claiming to have a dead drive) and it works great again- I just had a loose connection inside.

I believe that this kind of loose connection is relatively common, and that, if you don't want to open up the thing and do surgery for some reason, it's possible that there's a "stealth recall" or warranty extension on this problem.
