Huh. Return of the King got 11 Oscar nominations, and 11 Oscars. Has that ever happened before?

This backs up my theory that they were cautiously waiting until the third film in the trilogy before giving them the big awards.

... and a much better film

At tonight's Lear rehearsal we watched Ran. I hadn't seen it in a long time, and I think the first time I must have missed quite a bit of it, because I only remembered it as being quite good. It's actually stunningly good. It uses a lot of Shakespeare's themes better than Will does. It's a moving painting. Kurosawa uses color as well as just about any other director could use black and white. It's ending may be the most tragic in film history.

speaking of Lear

Come see our production of King Lear. It's really good, honest. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you probably won't see it again and again because it's only March 19th-21st. The earlier you get tickets the better seating you get.
