so, how geeky do i have to be that a group of carolingians don't get my obscure halloween costume reference? if i could have figured out what a ghem lord should wear other than facepaint, maybe it would have helped, but my research indicates that unless one owns a black dress uniform, jeans and a t-shirt is pretty close to what they wear all the time. sigh.

Well, relatively -- Bujold has a tendency to win the Hugo award for best SF novel year after year, and has a huge following. On the other hand, I didn't get it either. (Haven't read the books yet myself. [livejournal.com profile] msmemory would probably have gotten it...)

OK - years of slave lobor has left me out of the running for quite a few things including popular literature. Hopefully by 2006 I can safely re-enter life again.

Having just read it... fairly well. If slightly interrupted by, you know, Auditorial duties. I want to know how the kids are doing...

(heh, and ghem-lords even came up in it, which is why I knew the reference.. I don't think *anyone* in that universe wears jeans, though. :)

Too bad your free time just diminished...
Although I'm guessing that you haven't read them because you're busy doing other things, I could lend you my copies (except for Brothers in Arms, which is annoyingly out of print). They're certainly some of the best post-Golden Age sci-fi I've read.

Thanks, but we have all of them -- Caitlin's a big fan. (She actually buys them in hardcover.) Just don't have the time at the moment...
