POTC

I'll second (well, Nth, really) [livejournal.com profile] dkapell's recommendation to go see Pirates of the Caribbean. As in right now.

Saw it last night with [livejournal.com profile] tpau, [livejournal.com profile] ladysprite, [livejournal.com profile] jducoeur, [livejournal.com profile] msmemory, [livejournal.com profile] umbran, [livejournal.com profile] laurion, [livejournal.com profile] asdr83, [livejournal.com profile] outlander, and three people who haven't been eaten by LJ yet (an impressive majority, there). The film is excellent in every way. It has good acting from all the main players, but especially superb work from Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush. It is beautifully balanced between macabre drama and clever physical and verbal comedy, each twisty enough to surprise me most of the time. It is thoroughly original, which is a rarity in the modern movie industry. As a final touch of coolness, it contains a number of visual references to the Disney World ride of the same name (on which the film is "based"). I would watch it again right now. Go see it.

I took the advice and went to see the flick. Overall, a good effort. Shouldn't have sat that close to the screen but the theater was pretty full and it seemed better at the time than sitting off-center.

Depp was yummy, though he reminded me from time to time of Kevin Kline's Pirate King. (Maybe it was the swinging from ropes and the eyeliner.) Orlando Bloom is pretty but still needs some seasoning to reach his potential. The soldiers' hose looked right, but the heroine's underwear looked wrong to me. Shouldn't it have been split for functionality? Though then they probably couldn't get the PG-13 rating. Ah, well.

An evening not totally wasted. (For those that don't know me, that's a pretty good review.)
