I got my transmission pan gasket replaced this morning. This is a pretty basic if awkward operation that would take 10 minutes were it not for the annoyance of getting the old gasket off with a chisel, which took about 15. With testing and fluid cycling the total time was 30-35. Now, the guy wanted to charge me $80, but settled for $60. Is that anything like a fair price?

let's see, you talked him into a 25% discount. That's not bad. It could be lower -- say, with labor at $72 (a going rate), and a $10 part, half an hour labor + part is $46 -- but that would have taken uncommon bargaining skill.

Which save for the new car.

Many places charge a minimum of an hour labor. So it's not totally outlandish.
