Banner week for MA

So I mentioned to [livejournal.com profile] dkapell yesterday that between the SJC's same-sex ruling, Ted Kennedy's public challenging of Bush, and being the only state still prosecuting Microsoft, I was very impressed with recent Massachusetts governance. In fact, I said that it would be great if it weren't for lingering annoyances like the blue laws.

Huh.

It should be pointed out that one of the groups least happy with the repeal of the blue laws prohibiting liquor sales on Sundays are... liquor store owners. Okay, not all of 'em, but a lot of people who run mom 'n pop stores in the sticks kind of liked having one day off a week, and the repeal of this blue law is pissing a lot of them off because they're either going to have to hire some extra help or give up Sundays to stay competitive.

This is true, but it's a short-term artifact of the original problem. Small non-liquor stores are on the same footing, but it doesn't seem like a hardship because they never adjusted to it in the first place.

Nonetheless, the repeal still allows for individual towns to place similar bans, but the burden of being proactive will be on those who actually want it.
