Smile time isn't free...
We went over to
ladysprite and
umbran's place this evening to have a mini-marathon of the last four Angel episodes, as we'd gotten severely behind. They were all quite good, but the last one... If you are among the few who cares and does not already know, this is The Funniest Episode Ever, and good in other ways as well. Joss actually paying attention to the series this season has had the usual effect of marked higher quality writing, and this week's was one of those so-absurb-it-only-works-for-Joss themes that compares favorably with Buffy's best episodes. Go, watch.

Re:
I don't think the season as a whole is up to the best of Buffy, but it's a lot better than earlier Angel. With the possible exception of Matt Groening, I can't think of anyone who's managed to make a whole (American) television season without a few poor episodes. Between Smile Time and The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco I think they're doing fairly well.
