Last night [livejournal.com profile] tpau, [livejournal.com profile] ladysprite, [livejournal.com profile] umbran, and I went on a dinner-and-a-movie double date to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's a very sweet, frequently funny movie, and I like that they used a small, well-defined extraordinary element and developed its implications thoroughly as it affected human relationships. The delicacy with which the relationships unfold is very apt. As [livejournal.com profile] umbran put it, in this case we are actually justified in calling the film artfully constructed.

I'm somewhat surprised that this movie has so many well-known actors in it, given that its production values appear quite low and it was essentially not advertised. It's good to see established actors be willing to get involved in fringe projects like this one.

Haven't seen it yet, but really want to.

Have you seen Charlie Kaufman's other movies (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation)?

Actually, I was going to Tivo Adaptation but didn't, and I've had Being John Malkovich on DVD for some time but have not yet watched it. I do intend to...

I think you're underestimating the advertising level. I've been hearing buzz about this movie for well over a year, seeing occasional leadup ads for it for six months, and seen a modest number of prime-time (IIRC) TV ads for it. It's not getting publicized like a blockbuster, but I don't think anyone's expecting it to make enough money to be worth a $20 million ad budget.

But yes, I'm impressed by the cast. The stat I read somewhere (which seems plausible) is that the four lead actors have between them starred in seven of the top ten money-making films of all time. It sounds very much like these are folks looking to stretch a little, away from the assumptions of the "big movie" world...
