I am so happily surprised to now be in temporary possession of several hundred dollars worth of hard-to-replace Miracleman comics. alexx_kay is very trusting.

I'm very glad that the existence of a literate network of friends means that I only need to own a fraction of the media that I want to consume, with ad hoc distributed storage allowing for a sort of modern Alexandria effect.

It's practical. The amount of Good Stuff I've loaned-and-not-got-back over the years is small, and pales in comparison to the amount of Good Stuff I've borrowed from others in my turn. I, too, like the ad hoc Alexandria thang, and happily do my part to support it.

Funny; I'd call this the usual, historical way of doing things, and only recently do we all keep a copy of every song we've ever heard on our iPod and an archive of every book we ever read on our iRead?

I've long been interested in co-ops for housing, vehicles, and food, but I've never thought of using them for books and media.

Don't we effectively have those today with libraries (okay, private or university libraries for the membership requirement) and video stores? I'm probably missing something here.

We do, but I'm thinking on an even smaller, more closed-membership level, such as a group of friends. There wouldn't be dues, rental fees or membership cards, although there would be the requirement that everyone contribute equally to the purchase and upkeep of the materials. Ownership would be equal between the members, rather than residing with one central unit such as a library or store.
