Finally read The Dark Knight Returns. Now that is the bat.

Given the time it was written in and the themes it addresses, it's not too surprising that I find a core similarity between DKR and Watchmen. What did surprise me was how much this Batman stylistically held up the classic blue-and-grey caped crusader, as well as bringing the whole new level of darkness from which the modern films draw. The sense of regret for the world that permeates the book is profound; this again it shares with Watchmen.

They were definitely contemporaneous. Miller and Moore thought that they were, collectively, saying the final word on superheroes, and, by implication, killing the genre. There was some bitterness at the actual historical outcome, for a while :-s

In my opinion, it's one of the finest depictions of the Joker, too.
