useful... in the right situations. Say, for instance, if you need to defend the budget that pays for your salary...

your poll needs another question, askignwhat hte answerer does. lookignat who said what, the non-engineerssay it is good, the engineers say some varient of useless and dumb and soem say it doens't exist

I have my minion generate a daily status report. New information on it has varied from about 10 words (Finished this, finished that, still working on the other) to about a page of status, commentary and questions. In this situation, I'd say it's very useful.

The whole tech group has a meeting once a week. We try to keep it under 30 minutes, and the idea is to keep others apprised of what you are currently working on and what you think your next priority will be. That's very useful too.

It is vitally important that any sort of regular meeting communicate only actual information. Discussion of anything that doesn't affect the whole team should be handled in a later meeting of just those people required. Wasting people's time is disrespectful and antiprofitable.

I've asked for and provided these myself, and agree with dsrtao's assessment: updates are useful when managed properly.

If only you'd make them check boxes.

'cause, you know, all of those are true sometimes.

Your poll is flawed.

They can be any and all of the above for both their generator and their recipient(s).

As someone who doesn't work with you/isn't an engineer, reading a post with no context whatsoever, allow me to say that I assumed you meant weekly status reports on what you were up to. In which case, I'd be delighted to read them ;)

I'll generally prefer to put it up with no context and interpret responses on my end than to possibly tilt the response with framing commentary.

As for LJ reports on my personal status, I'll try to keep up, though I don't promise a strict weekly update schedule ;-)
