So, it turns out there is a reason that I can fail to notice 17 consecutive calls to my cell phone. This new phone has a handy feature where if you hold down the Volume Down button while the phone is closed, it activates Completely Silent Mode. So in my pocket it's totally silent about 50% of the time...

It'd probably be easier for all concerned if you just had a piece of string tied to your ankle and she had the other end. That way, if she wanted something from you, she could just tug the string...

I always thought part of the idea of a flip phone was that buttons would not be pushed while it was closed. Silly me. Mine is like yours and sets all sort of nonsensical settings while closed in a pocket.
