Would you have my back in a fight? I damn well better not; you're supposed to be ahead of me, or on my flank.

... Which is exactly the sort of situation in which you would have my back, the way I see it. If I were behind you it'd be a different story.

I have my ups and downs, but on the whole, yes.

I suppose that's "having your back". I always think of that phrase as meaning 'back to back' for some reason.
