Io dies natalis Solis Invicti

It's been a long slow grind down into darkness, and it was a thing of unspeakable beauty to see the yellow king force himself up once again out of the jaws of death, lean and angry and fighting to reconquer his vast and mighty kingdom. He swept his burning-honey eye over my country, and winked at me through the trees.

I have seen the new year, and it is awesome.

if you don't already have a regular place to see the sun rise, the top of the alewife garage has been the household tradition for the past couple of years. it's a great view, and seeing the sun rise over the city is kind of fun. as is the drama of "the sun must be up, it's just behind that building! it must have defeated those wolves by now!"

happy solstice to you.

Revere Beach was fun one year, though cold. It was worth seeing the sun come out of the ocean, but not every year. Brrr! I spent a certain amount of time looking over my shoulder to where I parked the car because the spot I chose was legal when we got there, but the sun was taking its sweet time rising and parking became technically illegal. No sign of law enforcement or much of anybody else.

I'm thinking better for summer solstice. Not as cold (I hope!) and the sun will come up before the rush hour parking ban starts.

is sunrise as important to summer solstice? i'd be all for watching a summer sunrise over the ocean, but i'm not as familiar with the holiday (and thus have no tradition of staying up all night/watching the sunrise then).

No idea. Just thinking of my own personal comfort. ;-)
