Naturally, my iPod becomes definitively broken not long before I take a lengthy car trip. Its data is fine, and it functions normally controlled through the I/O port, but the control surface is entirely unresponsive, so if I take it in the car I can't, say, make it start playing (I could make it stop by pulling the power, of course). So that's nice.

Sounds like maybe the hold switch is broken in the 'hold' position.

I can lend you an older working unit, and I'm willing to help try to repair this one.
