Sometimes, of course, the light of day makes all the difference. When I went to unpack my pavilion into the cellar, it was dark, and I was tired, but I noticed that the lock on the cellar door had been taped over. Certainly, I could have removed the tape and stowed my items, but given certain peculiarities of this basement (concerns about mold in some regions; a general air of potentially blowing up at any moment) and the nature of our access to it (entirely unofficial), I didn't want to open it up if there was some purpose behind sealing it up.

I figured [livejournal.com profile] komos would know if there was any significant reason for it, but of course he's gone for the week and, this admittedly being rather unfortunate, I have no cell number for him. So I figured I'd track down which neighbors had taped the door up and see if there was in fact some dire reason for it.

This evening when I got home from work, I thought I'd just have a quick glance at it, in case there was some facet of the door which, improbable as it might seem, I had overlooked in the dark. I walked around back, and indeed, there it was, the shiny black door with the lock and handle covered in light, blue tape.

... so, yeah, I just put the pavilion in the basement.

Light blue tape sounds like painter's masking tape. Did they recently repaint the door, perhaps?

Just so. Some other nearby trim had also been painter's taped and painted a shiny new black.

So, what you're saying is that you didn't notice the remains of Komos down there, right?

I did not. Of course, there are a lot of dark corners down there...

(Amontillado!)

Well, I'm sure you would have seen traces...

(Nonsense! Surely you would have heard the chains.)

Your pavilion was thoroughly dry? (Please excuse the paranoia. Patches of black caulk around the tub has sensitized me.)

Patches of black caulk are a bad idea. You should remove all your old caulk and replace it with a single shade of black caulk, all the way around. White caulk is a bad idea; it always looks mildewed. Black caulk *never* looks mildewed.

Ditto. I lost a pavilion once because it wasn't totally dry. I stowed it and didn't get back to it till the next weekend. End of pavilion. :-(
