Jan. 2nd, 2009

Rum, lemon juice, grenadine, and a maraschino cherry. It's sort of an odd drink, but it's the best I found (and fiddled with a little) for using up some of the grenadine and maraschino cherries I made. I keep forgetting that the cherries aren't sweet - adding some sugar next time might not be a bad plan. I am unimpressed with the quality of I-have-these-ingredients-what-can-I-make search tools online. Back to Old Mr. Boston I guess.

It makes a fine libation for toasting the new year, I think. All my friends seem to be saying the old year was a mess, and for everyone that it was, I sincerely hope 2009 is better for you. For me it had its ups and downs, but was less a rollercoaster than many years. I got done a lot less than I'd wanted to, but I lived a better life than I'd expected to. Of course I felt the pain the country, and then the world, went through as the summer and fall dragged on our ugly shell game. And I have unexpectedly great hopes for what a change of administration can do to right the course of the country and the world starting in the new year. But still, in many ways I think the election was the moral turning point, and I think most of the moral high points in 2009 will follow smoothly from it. I'm glad to have seen the year produce that result, so in the end I'm keeping 2008 as it is.

We went to First Night to celebrate the turning of the clock, because I'd never been and I like there to be (metaphorical) fireworks at midnight. Of course it was bloody cold and the winds were above 30 MPH on the harbor so they didn't do the fireworks, but, you know, the spirit of ritual and shouting and stomping around in the snow was there.

I didn't really get my bullet point resolutions together last year. I did the retrospective in February, and never really came up with a list for 2008 except "finish what you start", which proved risibly self-defeating from the moment of writing it. So, we'll call that a thorough failure. I guess I'll move it ahead into the new year, but with more specifics. So, here we are, my personal commandments for 2009:
  • Make those [secret blacksmithery items] with Fritz, at long last
  • Write That Weekend Larp
  • Build a better mousetrap XML processing system
  • Make a theremin
  • Dance more - all the time, really
  • Get sixpack abs - actually code for "reasonable diet and exercise"
  • Embrace and conquer this new job, whatever quirks it may turn out to have
  • Write the Great American Internet Application
  • Bring small unit tactics back to Carolingia
  • Secret Item #10, to Be Revealed Later
Well, there you are. It's more of a laundry list than I would have liked, but it's got a lot of the tilting at windmills that I try to put in.

Strangely, in comparison to the first one I did (wow, time flies), I always feel like my weakest link is the throwaway at the end. I didn't come up with a better set for the next year, and I don't think I have yet. Really, I think it was a key decision at the time to get my head back into shape, which worked surprisingly well for me, whether it looks a little trite in retrospect or not. I fixed the problem of the moment with the solution of the moment, so maybe I don't need to keep holding future lists to a standard that's already washed away. This is the list for this year, and I resolve not to second-guess.
