Went to see Ian Anderson at the BPC tonight. It was kind of a cross between a talk show and a concert, with Ian in very chatty form and a mix of new stuff and old material in strange new forms. You haven't heard Locomotive Breath until you've heard the kazoo solo. Typically for Tull ("I like the Tull bit just fine, it sounds like the villain form the next James Bond movie... it's the Jethro bit that gives me the wobblies. It's like some hillbilly thing") my favorite bit was probably the side A closer, as it were, in this case a high-energy version of Bach's Bourrée on which Ian showed off his ability to, well, not exactly sing but at least keen while flauting.

Y'know, it's really disturbing that I can easily imagine the kazoo solo in Locomotive Breath.

Had no idea this was happening. Pity -- while I'm less into Jethro Tull than I once was, they were my favorite group for most of ten years, and I'm still quite fond of them. (I've drifted away mostly because they're gradually moving more back to their jazzy roots, which is less my speed than the more serious rock and experimental stuff from the 70's...)

Too bad I found out so late, groups are always more fun.

You might not have been blown away; this was, I understand, quite different from a normal Tull show, however. It was part of the Rubbing Elbows (http://www.j-tull.com/news/ianrubbingelbows.html) tour, so it was Ian with some other non-Tull musicians, playing lots of stuff off his new solo album. Although it was fun to see him messing around (e.g. playing duets with some local artists), I only knew about 1/4 of the songs. I respect that he wants to push in new directions, but little of it really strikes me after about Heavy Horses.
