Still too hasty

Just watched the extended edition of The Two Towers.
Good things: Gimli, Merry & Pippin, Faramir, and even Boromir receive better treatment. All are still mutated from the book, but particularly the brothers from Gondor at least get some reason behind their actions. Revealing that Aragorn is 87 was also a nice touch, although he doesn't particularly act it, and in fact the whole cast comes off as too young in many ways.
Things about which I am neutral: Theodred's funeral and the forest coming to Helm's Deep are both good enough things to put in that I don't really feel like the time was wasted, but they didn't make the movie dramatically better or worse. Oddly, the end cut after the funeral was the most notable of a few times when I thought the editing in this version was actually choppier than the theatrical one.
Bad things: Boromir shouldn't be sent to Rivendell specifically to get the ring; that's just wrong. Theoden's exorcism is even more annoying this time, with a protracted argument between Saruman and Gandalf to give them another chance to butt heads.
All around, the additions were somewhat helpful but mostly little bits here and there that made the film fuller, rather than better. I'm not really surprised by this since, unlike Fellowship, the irritants in this film were more from addition than elision. Still a decent movie, though.
