OK, remakes are of course commonplace in film, and some of them seem a bit ill-considered. Liev Shreiber is The Manchurian Candidate, I'll buy that. Frank Oz remakes The Stepford Wives, a little odd. But... Keanu Reaves is John Constantine??? What is this, an attempt to make every Alan Moore adaptation worse than the last?

You know, from the trailers alone, I think I'd rather see Constantine than the Stepford Wives remake. Sure, Christopher Walken vamping evil is always a treat, but still. What's wrong with Keanu? Given that it's set in LA instead of London--I'd hate to see him trying to affect a thick accent just for faux versimlitude--it works to have someone who is, oh, broadcasts Left Coastish. Hell, he's pretty much the right age for the part, too.

I was hearing rumors that the trailer sucked. Dunno. Looked okay to me just now. (The "fall" sideways through the skyscraper looked cool.) Hellblazer is an occult horror book with rare superhero cross-references. "Welcome to my world" is cliched but a pretty accurate one-liner for Constantine's life.

They've reinterpreted Around the World in 80 Days as a vehicle for Jackie Chan, as well. (Although, I think it's just a new adaptation rather than a specific remake.)

Arnold is in it, too!

Confusion

I can't wait to easedrop on the moviegoers who think Constantine is a sequel to Matrix:Revulsion. I just hope Moore is getting stupid rich off this. That and I really want to see an interview with Keenu and Moore in the same room. One of those things that make reality go foop.

My prsonal dream casting has Robert Carlyle as John Constantine. He could have gotten the accent right and he smokes with more pathos and less cool.

I doubt Moore gets any money from this. Constantine's creation was in a work-for-hire book, and before there was any precedent for "rectroactive creator credit".

Hmm. I have to agree that Keanu as Constantine is -- well, somewhere between "creative" and "horrifying". (Although I'm willing to grant that it could still be a decent movie in the unlikely event that it has a decent script.) But it's hard to imagine much that looks worse than the Stepford Wives remake, which looks dreadfully stupid...
