Presidential debates begin this week, and given Bush's propensity for inept public discourse they might be Kerry's best chance of overcoming the incumbent's small but distinct lead. Of course, both sides traditionally try to raise expectations for the other side, so that they might fall further. The Republicans seem to be going to extremes, in that regard:
Matthew Dowd, the Bush-Cheney campaign's chief strategist, said in an interview earlier this month that Kerry "is very formidable, and probably the best debater ever to run for president." "I'm not joking," Dowd added. "I think he's better than Cicero"
Whereas Bush is more like Cato. Iraq delenda est.

Good debater ≠ more votes, unfortunately. If Bush weren't so darn devilishly cute, and Gore so stiff...Oh, wait, Kerry's the fall guy this year.
