I've started watching Samurai Jack. Man, is this a great show. Every shot feels methodically crafted to eke the most out of its profoundly minimalist style. I also completely love the art style, which looks not quite like anything else I've seen...

you should look at the powerpuff girls. :)

I've watched the Powerpuff Girls; they're reasonably good if strangely misandrist, but while there's a certain artistic similarity, I think there's less of a painted feel to the powerpuffs.

The only thing I've seen with a similar style are the eSurance ads -- yes, I'm serious. It's not a style of animation I love. I'm more of a deco inspired traditionalist. I love the lush yet stylized Superman cartoons of the 1930s, and Batman: The Animated Series which was clearly inspired by them.

The Incredibles had a similar deco inspired look. I watch the credits just to see the super-simplified stylish depictions of scenes from the movie.

That production team went on to do the 'Clone Wars' animated series (a.k.a the only Star Wars-related thing in the last five years that didn't suck)

It was weird how good that series was in spite of being connected to Episodes 1-3.

The Knights of the Old Republic games didn't suck, in fact, they captured the feel of 4-6 better than anything else, despite having zero character overlap (being set 4000 years earlier and all)

Including, arguably, 6. KotoR didn't have any cute fluffy (and marketable) aliens. At least, I don't recall any, and if there were, they sure weren't a major plot point.

You're right. There were a couple new alien races in the games, but they were clearly there for flavor, not anything to do with marketing.

Besides, why would they need marketing? They had lightsabers and, perhaps more importantly, didn't have George Lucas.

Ack, you're right, I totally forgot about some of the games out there. (And the lightsaber boy on YouTube).

It's a pity there won't be any more episodes, or at least none with all the originals. Mako, the voice of Aku, died last year.

There are episodes of Jack with almost no dialog. I love it!

My favorite one is Jack and the Rave. It's even got good music to it.

I was a big fan of the show when it aired. Excellent work with a 'painted' style that perfectly matches the genre, and incredible episodes where they really make use of sound to paint the aural canvas. I guess I'm still a fan, I just haven't watched it ina long time, since it went all re-runs.

Glad you found it: it is well worth the attention. I haven't seen all the episodes yet, but I'm close. They formed a perfect combination of attention to the moment (long pans, focusing on a specific instant, dwelling on the landscape as he passed by), attention to the plot and plot twists, and attention to the stylization.

I look forward to whatever else Genndy Tartakovsky directs. IMDB has him down for Astro Boy [?] and The Power of the Dark Crystal, the sequel to Jim Henson's work [rubs hands in anticipation].
